Before You Start

Welcome to The Course Creator’s Business Blueprint. Before we dive into the systems, strategies, and infrastructure that will scale your course business, we need to make sure you are in the right place.

This course is not about how to record your first module, write a sales page from scratch, or pick a microphone. It is about what comes after you have figured out the basics. To get the most out of this material, you need to have at least one published course — or be on the verge of launching one. If you are still in the ideation phase, the strategies here will not make much sense yet because you do not have a product to apply them to.

Let’s run through a quick readiness checklist. You should be able to check off most of these boxes before moving forward:

  • You have a course created and recorded.
  • You have chosen a platform to host your content.
  • You either have a few students enrolled already or you have a concrete launch plan ready to execute.
  • You have a basic website live, even if it is just a simple landing page.

If you looked at that list and realized you are missing a few pieces, do not panic. But do consider pausing this course to get those foundations in place. We have specific resources designed to help you cross that finish line. If you need to validate your idea and get your first launch planned, go through Validate & Launch. If you are still trying to decide where to host your videos and process payments, complete Pick Your Platform. And if your content is already recorded but you want to make sure it actually delivers results, work through Student Success & Course Quality.

If you haven’t launched yet, start there first. This course will still be here when you are ready. Building a business infrastructure before you have a product is putting the cart before the horse.

On the other hand, if you already have a course and are making some money, you are in the exact right place. Even if that “some money” is just a few hundred dollars a month, you have crossed the most difficult threshold. You have proven that people will pay for your knowledge. Now, it is time to stop treating your course like a side project and start treating it like a business.

What You’ll Need

As we move through the lessons, you are going to be making decisions about your operations, finances, and growth. To follow along and actually do the work, you will need a few things:

  • A spreadsheet. Google Sheets works perfectly. You do not need anything fancy or paid, but you need a place to track your numbers, map out your systems, and organize your thinking.
  • A few hours per week. This is not a weekend sprint. Building a sustainable business requires consistent, focused effort. Block out two to three hours a week to work through these lessons and implement the changes.
  • Willingness to think like a business owner. This is the most important requirement. Up until now, you have likely been operating as a creator — focused on content, cameras, and editing. Moving forward, you need to put on the hat of a business owner. That means looking at profit margins, customer acquisition costs, and operational efficiency, even when it feels less glamorous than creating content.

If you have your course, your checklist is cleared, and your spreadsheet is open, you are ready to go. Let’s start building your blueprint.

Keep going — you're making progress through The Course Creator's Business Blueprint.
