Your Brand Is Why People Buy
Go to Udemy. Search for “Facebook ads course.” As of today, there are over 10,000 results. Same topic. Similar content. Prices within $10 of each other.
Why does a student pick one over the other? Usually because they recognize the instructor. They saw them on YouTube. Read their blog. Got their newsletter. Watched them speak at an event. Or a friend said “take this person’s course, they’re legit.”
The course content matters. But the person behind it matters more.
What Personal Brand Means for Course Creators
Personal brand gets talked about like it’s a social media aesthetic or a logo. For course creators, it’s simpler than that. Your personal brand is the answer to three questions students ask before they enroll:
- Who is this person? (Do I know them? Have I heard of them?)
- Why should I trust them? (What results have they gotten? For themselves? For others?)
- Are they like me? (Do they understand my situation? Have they been where I am?)
If a student can’t answer those questions quickly, they bounce. Not because your course is bad. Because they have no reason to choose it over the next search result.
The Good News
You don’t need a million followers. You don’t need to be famous. You don’t need a polished personal brand with a color palette and a brand guide.
You need three things:
A specific audience you serve. Not “everyone who wants to learn marketing.” But “fitness coaches who want to fill their group classes using Facebook ads.” The narrower, the more trusted you become.
A clear result you deliver. Not “learn Facebook ads.” But “get 20 new group fitness members in the next 30 days.” Outcomes build authority faster than credentials.
A reason you’re the one to teach it. Your experience. Your story. Your unique approach. Something that makes a student think “this person gets my situation.”
This course helps you define all three.
What This Course Is Not
This isn’t about building an Instagram following or becoming an influencer. You don’t need to dance on TikTok or post selfies. Some of the most successful course creators have zero social media presence. They built their brand through their course content, their email list, and their reputation with students.
This course is about strategic positioning. Making decisions about how you present yourself so that when someone encounters your course, they immediately understand who you are, what you stand for, and why you’re qualified to teach them.
Let’s start with the most important question: why do people buy from people in the first place?
