Order Bumps: The Checkout Checkbox

Why Order Bumps Deserve Their Own Lesson

Order bumps are the most underrated revenue tool in a product suite. They add 10-20% to average order value, require zero additional traffic, and take minutes to set up. Yet most course creators never use them.

An order bump is a small checkbox on the checkout page: “Add [product name] for just $17.” It sits right next to the payment button. The customer is already entering their credit card. Adding one more item requires checking a box — no new payment, no new page, no new decision.

The Psychology Behind Why Bumps Work

The customer has already decided to spend money. The mental debate is over. They are not asking “Should I spend money?” anymore. They are in execution mode — filling in fields, completing the transaction. Adding $17 to an order they have already committed to feels like a rounding error, not a new purchase decision.

This is fundamentally different from an upsell, which requires a separate yes/no decision on a separate page. The order bump rides along on a decision already made.

What Makes a Good Order Bump

Six criteria:

  1. Complements the main purchase — A course on email marketing → email template pack. A course on video production → equipment checklist. The bump should feel like a natural accessory.

  2. Priced at 10-20% of the main offer — For a $297 course, the bump should be $17-47. The bump price should feel like “sure, why not” relative to the main purchase.

  3. Described in one sentence — If you need a paragraph to explain the bump, it’s too complex. “Add the complete email swipe file — 52 proven subject lines and templates you can deploy today — for just $17.”

  4. Delivered instantly — Same access as the main product. No separate delivery, no waiting.

  5. Has standalone value — The bump should be worth buying on its own. Not a teaser. Not a preview.

  6. Doesn’t compete with the main offer — The bump should enhance the main purchase, not replace part of it. If someone could skip the main offer and just buy the bump, your bump is too good (or your main offer has a problem).

Bump Copy That Converts

The checkbox text is the entire sales pitch. It needs to do three things in under 30 words: name the product, state the benefit, state the price.

Template: “Add [product name] — [one-sentence benefit] — for just $[price].”

Examples:

  • “Add the 52-Email Swipe File — proven subject lines and templates you can deploy today — for just $17.”
  • “Add the Course Launch Checklist — every task, email, and deadline for a flawless launch — for just $27.”
  • “Add the Pricing Calculator — figure out your exact price point in 5 minutes — for just $17.”

Where Bumps Fail

  • Unrelated products — Don’t sell a fitness ebook as a bump to a business course. The mismatch creates doubt.
  • Too expensive — A $97 bump next to a $97 course feels like doubling the price.
  • Too similar to the main offer — If the bump covers the same material as the course, buyers feel tricked.
  • Complex products — A bump that requires explanation kills the impulse. If it needs a video to understand, it’s not a bump.

Bump Metrics

Track two numbers:

  • Bump take rate: What percentage of buyers check the box? Target: 10-30%.
  • Bump revenue contribution: Bump take rate × bump price. This is pure profit added per transaction.

If your bump take rate is below 10%, test a different bump product or rewrite the checkbox copy.

Setting Up Bumps in GHL

GoHighLevel’s order bump feature integrates directly into the checkout flow. In your dashboard, navigate to Products, select the main offer, and scroll to the Order Bump section. Create or select an existing product to attach as the bump. Set the display text using the copy template above. The bump appears as a checkbox below the payment fields on your checkout page.
