Finding JV Partners

Finding JV Partners

Joint venture partnerships represent the highest tier of affiliate relationships. While standard affiliates might promote your course alongside dozens of other products, a true JV partner creates a dedicated promotional effort — often including custom emails, webinars, or social media campaigns. Finding the right JV partners requires strategic thinking about audience alignment and relationship building.

Complementary, Not Competitive

The most common mistake course creators make is approaching direct competitors as JV partners. If you both teach essentially the same thing to the same audience, there’s little incentive for collaboration.

Instead, look for complementary niches — creators whose audiences would benefit from your course but who aren’t directly competing with your core offering.

Consider these examples:

  • A photography course creator partnering with someone who teaches Lightroom editing techniques
  • A notary law expert partnering with someone who teaches notary marketing and business building
  • A YouTube strategy instructor partnering with someone who teaches thumbnail design and channel optimization
  • A copywriting course creator partnering with someone who teaches email marketing implementation

The key question: “Does my ideal student also need what this person teaches, and vice versa?”

Where to Find Potential Partners

Your Existing Network

Start close to home. Who have you already interacted with in your industry? Past podcast guests, people who’ve commented thoughtfully on your content, peers you’ve met at virtual events or in mastermind groups. Warm connections convert to partnerships far more easily than cold outreach.

Podcast Discovery

Find podcasts in your niche and adjacent niches. Look at past guests — are there creators whose expertise complements yours? Note that appearing as a guest yourself builds relationship capital that can later translate to partnership conversations.

Content Engagement

Who creates content that resonates with your ideal students? Follow them, engage meaningfully with their posts, share their work when it’s genuinely valuable. Become a familiar, positive presence before making any ask.

Marketplace Platforms

If you sell on platforms like Teachable or have presence in course marketplaces, look at other instructors in related categories. Many platforms facilitate connections between instructors.

Student Referrals

Ask your students what other courses or creators they follow. This reveals the ecosystem your ideal students already inhabit — and points you toward potential partners who are already reaching your target audience.

Start Small, Build Up

Don’t make your first JV pitch to the biggest name in your industry. The rejection will sting, and you won’t have refined your approach yet.

Instead, identify creators at a similar stage to you — people with engaged audiences of a few thousand, who are actively growing and likely open to collaboration. These “peer-level” partnerships often prove more valuable anyway because both parties are invested in making the collaboration work.

As you successfully execute smaller partnerships, you build case studies, testimonials, and confidence that make larger partnerships more attainable.

The Benefits of Strategic JV Partnerships

Understanding why JVs are valuable helps you communicate that value to potential partners:

  • Audience access: You gain exposure to people who’ve never encountered your brand
  • Free exposure: Unlike paid advertising, you only pay when results occur
  • List building: Partners often require list swaps or opt-in requirements that grow your email list
  • Leveraged trust: When a trusted creator recommends you, their trust transfers to you
  • Credibility by association: Being promoted by respected names elevates your perceived expertise
  • No upfront cost: Unlike ads, there’s no budget risk — you only pay for performance
  • Relationship capital: Each successful partnership opens doors to additional partnerships
  • Future collaboration: Today’s JV partner might become tomorrow’s co-creator or event partner

Qualifying Potential Partners

Before investing time in outreach, assess whether a potential partner is a good fit:

  • Does their audience match your ideal student profile?
  • Do they actively promote other products, or do they rarely do affiliate promotions?
  • What’s their engagement level (not just follower count)?
  • Have they promoted similar products before? What seemed to work?
  • Is their content quality and brand alignment compatible with yours?

A creator with 5,000 highly engaged email subscribers who regularly promotes relevant products will likely outperform someone with 50,000 social followers who rarely does promotions.

Building Before Asking

The most successful JV partnerships emerge from relationships, not cold pitches. Before you ever mention your affiliate program or a potential promotion:

  • Engage with their content consistently and genuinely
  • Share their work with your audience when it provides value
  • Look for opportunities to provide value to them first
  • Be patient — rushed relationship-building feels transactional

The creators who consistently secure the best JV partners are those who view relationship-building as an ongoing practice, not a tactic deployed only when they need something.
