Thinkific — Flexible & Developer-Friendly
Thinkific is the platform for control freaks — and I mean that as a compliment. Where other platforms lock you into their design and structure, Thinkific gives you room to customize. You can theme your student experience, build custom pages, and integrate with more external tools than most competitors.
That freedom comes with a cost: setup takes longer, and you’ll spend more time configuring things that other platforms handle out of the box.
What Thinkific Does Well
Customization and themes. Thinkific offers the most design flexibility of any hosted platform. You can customize your student experience with themes, custom CSS, and page builders. If you want your course site to look like your main website, Thinkific makes that more possible than most.
Course features. Thinkific’s course builder supports video, audio, text, PDFs, quizzes, surveys, assignments, and completion certificates. The quiz builder is more capable than most — you can create quizzes with multiple question types, passing scores, and prerequisite gates (students must pass quiz 1 before accessing lesson 2).
Free plan. Like Teachable, Thinkific offers a free tier — 1 course, unlimited students, no transaction fees. It’s one of the most generous free plans available.
Integrations. Thinkific integrates with more third-party tools than most platforms: Stripe, PayPal, Zapier, Mailchimp, ConvertKit, ActiveCampaign, HubSpot, and more. If you already have a marketing stack, Thinkific plugs into it.
Multilingual support. Thinkific supports multiple languages out of the box — a feature most competitors lack.

No transaction fees on any plan. Thinkific doesn’t take a cut of your sales — you only pay standard Stripe/PayPal processing fees.
Key limits: The free plan is limited to 1 course. Basic unlocks quizzes, surveys, and certificates. Start adds assignments, bundles, and priority support. Grow is where most scaling creators land.
Where Thinkific Falls Short
No built-in email marketing. Thinkific doesn’t have an email platform. You’ll need ConvertKit, Mailchimp, or another tool for email sequences and newsletters.
No funnel builder. Like Teachable, Thinkific focuses on course delivery. Landing pages and sales funnels require a separate tool.
Setup time. Because Thinkific gives you more control, it takes longer to configure. Expect 2–3 days to get your course looking right, compared to half a day on Teachable.
Community features are basic. Thinkific added community functionality, but it’s limited compared to Kajabi or dedicated community platforms.
The interface feels dated. Compared to Kajabi’s polished admin area, Thinkific’s backend feels like it was designed in 2018. Functional, but not inspiring to work in.
Who Should Choose Thinkific
- Creators who want maximum customization — if you need your course site to match your brand precisely, Thinkific gives you the most control
- Creators with existing marketing tools — if you already use ConvertKit for email and Leadpages for landing pages, Thinkific plugs in seamlessly
- International creators — multilingual support makes Thinkific a strong choice for non-English markets
- Creators who want no transaction fees on a budget — the free plan has no transaction fees, unlike Teachable’s free tier
Who Should Skip Thinkific
- Creators who want all-in-one — if you need email, funnels, and courses in one place, GHL or Kajabi is better
- Creators who want to launch this weekend — Thinkific’s setup takes longer than Teachable
- Creators who care about a polished admin experience — the backend feels functional, not premium
The Bottom Line
Thinkific is the “power user” platform. It gives you more control than Teachable, more flexibility than Kajabi, and no transaction fees on any plan. The trade-off is setup time and the need for separate marketing tools. If you’re a tinkerer who wants things exactly your way, Thinkific is your platform.
