Free & Low-Budget Options to Start

Here’s the advice most platform comparison articles won’t give you: you can launch a course for $0. Not “free trial then $97/month.” Actually free.

The catch? Free platforms limit what you can do. They work for validating your first course. They start to hurt when you’re ready to build a real business around your content.

The Free Options

Teachable Free Plan

  • 1 course, unlimited students
  • $1 + 10% transaction fee per sale
  • Basic course player, no quizzes or certificates
  • Best for: Your first beta course or a lead magnet course

Thinkific Free Plan

  • 1 course, unlimited students
  • No transaction fees — you keep everything minus Stripe/PayPal
  • Includes quizzes, surveys, and basic student management
  • Best for: A single course with no budget — Thinkific’s free plan is the most generous

Gumroad

  • Unlimited products, no monthly fee
  • 10% flat fee per sale (includes payment processing)
  • Not a real course platform — more like a digital storefront
  • Best for: PDF guides, templates, short video series — anything you can deliver as a download
  • Upload videos/PDFs to Google Drive, share links
  • Use Stripe Payment Links to collect payment
  • Manually email access links to buyers
  • Best for: A 5-person beta where you’re testing demand, not building a business

YouTube Unlisted + Email

  • Upload course videos as unlisted on YouTube
  • Deliver links via email (any free email tool)
  • Collect payment via Stripe, PayPal, or Venmo
  • Best for: A free or low-cost beta where you’re gathering testimonials, not revenue

The $30–$60/Month Tier

Teachable Starter ($29/mo annual / $39/mo monthly)

  • 5 courses, 5% transaction fee
  • Basic course player, student management
  • Upgrade when: The 5% fee costs more than upgrading to Builder ($69/mo)

Thinkific Basic ($36/mo annual / $49/mo monthly)

  • 1 course, no transaction fees, quizzes and certificates
  • Upgrade when: You need more than 1 course

Podia ($39/mo)

  • Unlimited courses, downloads, and coaching
  • Basic email marketing included
  • No transaction fees
  • Upgrade when: You need drip scheduling, advanced email, or funnels

When Free Stops Working

Free and budget platforms work until they don’t. Here are the signs it’s time to upgrade:

You’re losing money to transaction fees. At 10% per sale, Teachable Free takes $10 from every $97 course. Sell 50 copies a month and you’re giving away $500. The Builder plan ($69/mo with 0% fees) pays for itself at 7 sales per month.

You need email marketing. Free platforms don’t include email sequences. You can add ConvertKit’s free plan (up to 1,000 subscribers), but managing two platforms means two logins and manual student sync.

You need more than 1 course. Most free plans cap you at 1 course. When you’re ready for a second course, a lead magnet, or a mini-course, you need a paid plan.

You need a proper sales page. Free course platforms give you a basic product page, not a high-converting sales page with testimonials, module previews, and urgency elements.

You’re doing any kind of launch. Launches require email sequences, countdown timers, cart open/close pages, and follow-up automation. Free platforms can’t do any of that.

The Smart Upgrade Path

Here’s the most cost-efficient path from zero to a full business:

  1. Month 1–2: Launch your first course on Thinkific Free or Teachable Free. Validate. Get your first 10–50 students.

  2. Month 3–4: Upgrade to a paid plan when revenue justifies it. Thinkific Basic ($36/mo) or Teachable Starter ($29/mo).

  3. Month 5–6: Add email marketing (ConvertKit free tier up to 1,000 subscribers).

  4. Month 7+: When you’re paying $100+/month across multiple tools, evaluate whether GHL ($97/mo Starter) would consolidate and save money.

The point isn’t to avoid spending money — it’s to spend money on the right things at the right time. Don’t pay for GHL before you’ve validated your course sells. Don’t stay on Teachable Free when the transaction fees cost more than upgrading.

Keep going — you're making progress through Pick Your Platform.
