What Is a VSL (And When to Use One)

The Definition

A video sales letter (VSL) is a long-form sales video — typically 10 to 45 minutes — hosted on a minimal web page with a buy button below (or beside) the video. The page itself has very little text. The video does the selling.

This is different from a text sales page, which Write Your Sales Page covers in detail — that’s a 12-section written page designed to guide a reader from attention to action.

Side-by-side comparison of text and video sales pages

When VSLs Tend to Outperform Text

  • Higher-priced courses ($500+) — At this price point, viewers often need more persuasion and a stronger sense of connection before buying. Video builds that faster.
  • Visual or technical topics — If your course teaches something where seeing is believing (design, software, physical skills), a VSL lets you demonstrate before they buy.
  • Audiences that prefer watching over reading — Some markets consume everything through video. Meet them where they are.
  • Emotional transformation stories — When tone of voice, pacing, and facial expressions matter, video conveys nuance that text can’t.

When Text Pages Are Better

  • Lower-priced courses — A 30-minute video for a $47 course can feel like overkill. A tight text page often converts just as well.
  • SEO-dependent pages — If organic search traffic matters, text pages give search engines content to index.
  • Skimmers — Some buyers want to scan headings, read bullet points, and jump to pricing. Text pages serve that behavior.

The Hybrid Approach

Many course creators use a short video (2-5 minutes) at the top of a text sales page. The video introduces the problem and the instructor; the text below handles the details, social proof, and FAQs. This combines the emotional hook of video with the scannability of text.

Let Data Decide

The best approach is often to test both. Create a VSL version and a text version, drive equal traffic to each, and see which converts better. GoHighLevel makes it easy to set up these split tests on simple landing pages.
