Recording Options: Camera, Slides, AI, or Hybrid
When it’s time to produce your VSL, the first decision is how you’ll record it. You have four main options, each with distinct advantages.
1. You on Camera (Talking Head)
This is you, speaking directly to the viewer. It’s the most personal format and builds trust quickly because viewers can see your face, read your expressions, and feel your energy.

Best for: Course creators who are comfortable on camera and whose personal credibility is central to the offer.
Tips:
- Position your camera at eye level
- Use good front lighting (a ring lightRing Light Kit or window light works)
- Keep your background clean and uncluttered
- Look into the camera lens, not at yourself on screen
2. Slides + Voiceover
The classic VSL format. You create presentation slides and narrate over them. No need to appear on camera, which lowers the barrier considerably.
Best for: Technical courses, data-heavy offers, or creators who prefer not to be on camera.
Software options:
- Build slides in Keynote, PowerPoint, or Google Slides
- Record with ScreenFlow (Mac), Camtasia (PC), or OBS (free, cross-platform)
3. AI Avatar
Use tools like HeyGen or Colossyan to generate a virtual presenter who reads your script. The technology has improved dramatically and can be surprisingly convincing.
Best for: Quick script testing, camera-shy creators, or multilingual variations of your VSL.

4. Hybrid
Mix on-camera segments with slides. Show your face during high-connection moments — your hook, story beats, and the final call to action. Switch to slides for explanations, data, and demonstrations.
Best for: Most professional VSLs. This is the format used by top direct-response marketers because it combines the trust of a real person with the clarity of visual support.
Which Format Should You Choose?
| Factor | Talking Head | Slides + VO | AI Avatar | Hybrid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trust building | Highest | Medium | Lower | High |
| Production speed | Medium | Fast | Fastest | Slower |
| Technical complexity | Low | Low | Medium | Higher |

| Best for technical/explainer offers | No | Yes | Maybe | Yes |
The Key Insight
Your script quality matters far more than your recording format. A brilliant script recorded as simple slides will outperform a mediocre script filmed with cinema-quality cameras. Choose the format that lets you execute consistently and focus your energy on writing the strongest possible message.
